Planning a wedding can be both exhilarating and a tad overwhelming, right? One minute you’re daydreaming about your perfect day, and the next you’re drowning in a sea of color swatches, fabric samples, and Pinterest boards. While wedding planning timelines may be different for every couple, the first thing I encourage all couples to do is create your wedding mood board. Think of it as your creative compass, guiding you through the overwhelm of choices. Let’s dive into how to create one that’s uniquely yours!
What is a Wedding Mood Board?
A wedding mood board is a visual collage that captures the look and feel you want for your big day. It can include colors, textures, photos, patterns, and anything else that inspires you. Essentially, it’s your wedding daydream brought to life on paper, or on screen, with Pinterest and Canva being my favourite tools to help you create your wedding mood board.
Why have a Wedding Mood Board?
Creating a mood board is crucial when you're meeting with and hiring wedding vendors. It helps ensure that both you and your vendors are on the same page from the get-go, especially since describing your wedding vision verbally can be tricky. By presenting a collection of photos that visually capture your desired aesthetic, you minimize the chances of any misunderstandings.
Step 1: Discuss Your Ideal Wedding With Your Partner
Before you rush to your laptop to dive into Pinterest, take some time to do a bit of offline brainstorming with your partner. My top advice is to deeply explore your relationship and what defines you as a couple. Schedule a date night to discuss your vision and must-haves. Here are some questions to consider together before you start creating a wedding mood board to kickstart the creative wedding planning process
What activities do we love doing together? Are we more laid-back, or do we thrive in lively, energetic settings—or maybe a mix of both?
What has been our favorite vacation spot, date location, or place to hang out? What emotions did that place evoke?
Which season feels right for our wedding? How will the season influence the overall mood of our special day?
What type of wedding doesn't resonate with us? What elements just don't feel like us?
Create a list of words that describe your wedding vibe, such as intimate, adventurous, carefree, nostalgic, silly, cheerful, cozy, laid-back, romantic, wild, vivacious, and warm.
Step 2: Gather Your Inspiration
Start by collecting all the things that catch your eye. Pinterest is a goldmine, but don’t stop there. Flip through wedding magazines, scroll through Instagram, and even look at home décor sites. Save anything that makes your heart skip a beat—flowers, dresses, venues, lighting, even fonts for your invitations.
Excited to start exploring on Pinterest? Searching beyond just photos of weddings can help focus your wedding search so consider these points:
What kind of home decor catches our eye? Look for design ideas from homes and bedrooms—places that feel inviting and comfortable to you.
Pin clothes, accessories, and fashion blogger outfits that appeal to you. These can illustrate your style and be translated into your wedding design.
Explore various typography styles on Pinterest. What design elements attract you? Do you prefer large, bold fonts or more traditional ones?
Step 3: Define Your Vision
Now, take a step back and look at all your collected items. What themes or patterns do you notice? Are you gravitating towards rustic charm, glamorous elegance, boho chic, or modern minimalism? Identifying your overall style will help streamline your choices.
Step 4: Add 8-10 Images To Your Mood Board
After collaborating with your partner to shape your vision and gathering inspiration from Pinterest, it's time to refine your collection. Begin by choosing the most captivating photos and gradually narrow them down until you have a selection of just 8-10 images. Sign up to Canva if you don't use it already and search for 'Wedding Mood Board' in the search tool to find a design for you to do the fun part and add your images to.
Step 5: Define Your Colour Choices
Most Canva mood board templates have some space for you to show the colours which appeal to you most. After arranging your favorite images in your Canva wedding mood board, observe which colors appear frequently. Use these colors to fill the spaces on the Canva template, creating a cohesive design. These recurring colors will form your wedding color palette, guiding your choices for floral arrangements, fabric textures, invitation designs, and more.
Step 6: Don't Just Make It Pretty, Make It You
It's very easy to get caught up in the sea of beautiful images out there on Pinterest so it helps to give it a final look over. Think about the major components of your wedding and make sure they're included in your mood board: venue, attire, décor, flowers, and stationery. Make sure your images represent what you want for each of these. For instance, if you love peonies, include photos of peony bouquets. If a vintage lace dress makes you swoon, add that too. These elements will become the focal points of your mood board.
Step 7: Use Your Mood Board as Your Guide
With your mood board complete, you now have a visual guide that will help you make decisions with confidence. Share it with your wedding planner, florist, decorator, and anyone else involved in bringing your vision to life. It’s much easier to show what you want than to explain it!
Final Tips
Be Authentic: Let your mood board reflect your personality and style as a couple.
Stay Flexible: It’s a guide, not a rulebook. It’s okay to tweak things as you go.
Have Fun: This is your celebration of love, so enjoy every step of the planning process!
